Obituaries

Obituary Database

The obituary database is an index to the obituaries that have appeared in local newspapers since as far back as the 1890s. Entries include Palo Altans and residents of neighboring cities who worked in Palo Alto. Copies of the obituaries themselves are available at the History Desk in the Main Library. To retrieve a copy of an obituary, e-mail the historian, Steve Staiger at steve.staiger@cityofpaloalto.org or call him at (650) 617-3100, Ext. 3211.

Guy Miller

Guy Miller (1877-1955) for whom the archives are named.

Guy Miller came to Stanford from Oregon in 1897, and, while pursing a degree in English, developed a passion for history. In 1934 the city of Palo Alto retained Miller to index its extensive set of municipal records. When funds for Miller's work ran out, he volunteered to continue without pay. In 1948 the Palo Alto Historical Association was founded in part to subsidize Miller's efforts. During his last decade, Miller served as the librarian for the Palo Alto Times and frequently lectured to students and community organizations.
